Beyond The Salon
About Me
Jessica Willson
Owner & Stylist
I am a hairstylist with 30+ years in the industry. In 2021, after working in the same salon for 22 years, I decided to go into business for myself. I now rent a space at The Artery in Ferndale and get to work alongside some of my favorite humans.
I aim to provide my clients with creative, clean, inclusive, and high-quality services. I pride myself on taking the time to find out what exactly my clients want from each appointment and making a plan to get them the healthy, happy hair of their dreams. I use Malibu C wellness treatments to ensure the canvas is prepped and ready for color or styling. I use mostly Pulp Riot color to create, with Olaplex Bond Repair and Trionics developers to keep my clients' hair healthy.

In 2025, I began assisting Meg Long of Colouring on the Spectrum with her in-person CMY color theory courses across the United States.
Watching Meg create warm, inviting learning spaces for stylists inspired me to bring my own teaching experience into the beauty industry. I use the skills I've developed teaching college — breaking down complex ideas, building accessible learning materials, and making room for different ways of thinking — to create workbooks and educational resources for independent stylists and creatives.
My resources are practical, neurodivergent-friendly, and designed to make complicated things feel clear, usable, and less scary.
I earned my Ph.D. in Philosophy from Wayne State University. My dissertation explored racial segregation in U.S. salons, with attention to how predominantly white salon spaces often fail Black clients through a lack of training, access, and cultural understanding.
I live with my partner, who is also a philosophy professor. We love board games and video games, although these days we mostly have time for one or two hobbies at a time.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey and Borderlands 2 are my favorite video games.
We love watching and playing D&D and are big fans of Critical Role and Dimension 20. I love literally anything Dropout TV puts out.
I'm working on becoming a Taskmaster super fan.
I've also started throwing and hand-building ceramics. I'm not good at it yet, but it is fun to play in clay.
On my rare time off, I can usually be found road (or plane) tripping to see my favorite band: Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers. I've been all over the place to see them over the last 20+ years. Really though, that is about the most exciting and adventurous I get; the rest of the time I'm a homebody and an introvert:)
